Important for readers in India. Indian residents may trade forex only through authorised entities on recognised Indian exchanges, in permitted currency pairs. Trading forex, gold or other CFDs with overseas brokers and sending money abroad for margin is not permitted under FEMA, and the RBI's Alert List names many overseas brokers, including several below (marked On RBI Alert List). This page is for readers where these brokers are licensed to serve them. Check the law where you live before opening an account. CFDs are complex, leveraged products and most retail accounts lose money.

Our verdict

ThinkMarkets is a UK/Australian broker with FCA, ASIC and CySEC licences that offers gold on MT4, MT5, TradingView and its own ThinkTrader platform. It is not available to Indian residents and is named on the RBI Alert List.

ThinkMarkets was founded in 2010 and runs its main operations from London and Melbourne. It holds Tier-1 licences from the FCA, ASIC and CySEC, plus regulation in Japan, Dubai, South Africa, the Cayman Islands, Seychelles and Mauritius. Gold traders can choose a Standard account, where costs are built into the spread, or the ThinkZero account, which offers raw spreads with a commission of $3.50 per side ($7 round turn) per lot on metals. CompareForexBrokers reports gold spreads of around $0.30 on ThinkZero; the broker does not publish a typical gold spread for the Standard account. Platform choice is a strength: MT4, MT5, TradingView and the in-house ThinkTrader platform are all supported. Retail clients under the FCA are limited to 1:20 leverage on gold, while the offshore entity offers much higher leverage, which also increases the risk of fast losses. A swap-free account is available with a flat weekly administration fee. The minimum deposit is low or zero on standard accounts but higher for ThinkZero. ThinkMarkets' global website says its services are not directed at residents of India, and the brand appears on the RBI Alert List, so it is not a practical option for Indian traders.
